Japan at War reviews:
Russ and Gunnar, recieved my two volume set today and had to tell you how impressed I am with what I've seen so far. I'll take days to do justice to both books for the sheer amount of information you've put into these two books(660+ pages). Congratulations on a great two set that I'm sure I'll be using for a long time! I was surprised I recieved #12 as I was in the second printing. Looking for more good things from you 2 in the future.
Just received my two volume set and sat down for a couple hours going through it. The books are really nice; lots of information, great photos and the volume II, which contains many period photos and prints, is especially neat to look at. It's well done, and worth the price. It was also cool to see some of my collection in there (pistols and muzzle covers, and rifle cleaning kit). I did see that my Type 30 muzzle cover was labeled as a Type 38 cover. We are what we are; picky, picky, picky.
Mine came just a little bit ago and this will take a while to fully go through. Looks very well done - especially with my stuff in it Looks like quite a few of us have some very nice items portrayed in there. Good job Russ!
Received my copies today. They are the result of a great labor of love, for I do know how much work goes in to over 600 pages of Book!Well done guys.I read with interest the info on the draft and training of the Japanese soldier. There are lots of "soft" goods in the volumes, hats, uniforms, etc. for you guys who want to see and learn about that stuff. Also the accoutrements are well covered, slings, pouches, etc. A good brief write up on the rifles, which looks pretty familiar, with lots of great pictures. All in all, well worth having for reference and enjoyment.
got mine today as well and these are amazing! the only thing missing from these volumes is some of my stuff
I received my long awaited copies yesterday and due to rain in our area which took me away from the fencing job in my yard (what a shame!) I was able to thumb through every page of both volumes and IMHO this publication is without a doubt the best of it's type, it surpasses everything else out there by covering every facet of WW2 Japanese Militaria, never before has so much been included in one publication, everything from pocket knives to post war Pacific relic hunting has been covered in great detail and the inclusion of so many period photos of Japanese soldiers in the field really tops it off. Of course it would not have been possible without the efforts of so many collectors: Roy's incredible rifle collection, Jareth's fine headgear, Rob's slings, pouches & pistols, John's muzzle covers just to mention a few, I know I'll be going back to these books for reference for many years to come & I'm real proud to have been a part of it...Hats off to Russ & Gunnar for such a fine job and lastly I have to mention that the addition of the photo of the MARX 6" Japanese soldier in the forward section was a great touch, being born in 1957 and growing up in the 60's the MARX 6" Japanese soldiers, the Sands of Iwo Jima and of course the 3 Stooges Naki, Waki & Saki WW2 Japanese acrobat characters (what a riot!) were my first exposures to the Japanese WW2 soldier and without a doubt fueled what has been become a life long obsession to collect everything WW2 Japanese that I can find, even to the point of travelling out to the islands where the fighting took place.GREAT JOB GUYS!Cheers, Rick
Ditto all the above! It was nice to see my ol T-11 LMG cover and that mint sling again I had a set of those toy soldiers in the '60s as well!
Hello Russ. Books arrived today. They are very nice, and well laid out. I was a bit disappointed in the the sparce sword info. But that was kinda made up for, with Dons pocket knives. There is a problem. The first book I looked through, started to shead pages, in the center. Another looks like some could get loose. The problem is, that the pages are serrated, at the binding. In time, they're all gonna tear out, like notebook paper. This is the fault of the printers, not you guys. Any other reports of same? Regards, M.P.
Most comprehensive volumes to date. Everything is covered.
Got my delux copies yesterday. Very nice, I have only had time to thumb through them. Those rifles from the fellow in Mississippi look real nice. A page came out first book I opened. I'm going to leave it alone and in time see how many loosen up and take it to a book binder here and get him to fix it. I don't have much confidence in a fellow that can't fix it the first time being able to fix it the second time. Binder here does real good work, have had several Bibles with loose pages recovered and none have loosened.Russ, you and Gunnar did a superb job.
Hi Russ, Spoke to Wendy Montez today (07-13) and placed my order for your book. Can't wait till it gets here! Thanks for your hard work and determination, putting a book together of that scope is no small feat! Thank You, Jeff
Received my deluxe edition the day before yesterday and pretty much all I can say is WOW. I for one am very impressed with the amount of material in the books and especially like the variety of unique items, e.g., pocket knives, watches, helmets...you name it. Certainly a lot of new information and the articles and the translated diary are great additions. Again, job well done. It will probably take me two months just to get through both volumes.
Well.... After what seemed to be 27 life times waiting for the books... I finally got them..... YAY!!They look great, very nice work gentlemen! Well worth the money and a great addition to the library. Now to do some research and drool at the pictures
RussI have been reading these books. WOW!! Thanks for doing an awesome job. My dad purchased a copy too. He loves it. I really like how you put the pictures big with the text around it. It has kinda a unique look to it. I will be using it alot for reference. Thank You Again!!Jay Plant
Hello Russ.
Just got the book tonight in the mail and have this feedback: OH MY GOD!!!!
This is by far the best reference book out there bar none on Japanese militaria! And believe me, I have them all (e.g., Nakata v1 and 2, Osprey, Hunnicutt etc.) You have surpassed all. The quality of text, photos, and info is mind blowing. I am so glad I have a copy and also thanks for the kind acknowledgement too. If you ever need any other photos, please do not hesitate to ask me. For fun, here are some goffy pics of me in my reenactment gear attached. Also I build plastic models as my other hobby so here are some pics of Japanese projects I did for your viewing enjoyment:
Aloha Russ!
A few days ago I received my two-volume book set and the first thing I notice was the book’s covers! Excited, I had to show my wife!!! I took a quick skim through both volumes and was surprised to see so much detailed material and information and how well it was put together. All in one book that I will need more time to look and read through the two volumes. Definitely one of the best set of books out there and will become a “must have” for anyone who collects Japanese militaria.
You guys did a great job putting this on paper!!!!
Mahalo again,
